LRSS in China: A Journey of Faith and Community
By Fr. John Mi
As part of our 50th Anniversary series, Fr. John Mi shares the inspiring story of the remarkable growth of LRSS in China.
In the bustling city of Shanghai, where life moves at a relentless pace, a group of young Chinese Catholics gathers every weekend for a transformative experience—Little Rock Scripture Study. Their journey with LRSS is not just about studying the Scriptures; it's a profound exploration of faith and community that has touched the lives of many.
It all began with a chance encounter in 2002 when a Singaporean bookstore owner attended an LRSS seminar in Sydney, Australia. Intrigued by the structured approach and depth of understanding offered by LRSS, she brought the study materials back to her store in Singapore. Little did she know that her decision would ignite a flame that would spread across Chinese communities in Asia and other parts of the world.
Fr. Lucas Ng, a dedicated priest serving a vibrant Chinese parish in Malaysia, stumbled upon the LRSS materials during a visit to the bookstore. Captivated by the promise of deepening his parishioners' understanding of Scripture, he wasted no time in introducing LRSS to his community. With the support of parishioners and volunteers, they embarked on a journey to translate LRSS books into Chinese.
Growth and Expansion: Spreading the Light
The early years were challenging but rewarding. By 2005, thanks to the efforts of the Mustard Seed Evangelization Center in Malaysia, four LRSS books were translated, marking the beginning of a movement. These texts found their way into the hands of eager learners in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia, enriching Chinese Catholic communities with a deeper appreciation of Scripture.
In 2007, LRSS crossed borders into Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau, facilitated by partnerships with Kuangqi, a Jesuit publication house, and the dedicated translators of Catholic Biblical Seeds for Chinese. Each translation was not just a linguistic exercise but a labor of love to make the Word of God accessible and relevant to the Chinese-speaking world.
A Beacon in Mainland China: Overcoming Challenges
Bringing LRSS to mainland China was met with initial resistance and logistical hurdles. But in 2010, a breakthrough occurred in Yiwu City. Inspired by success stories from neighboring countries, a team of volunteers and I organized the first LRSS seminar. It was a modest beginning, but the enthusiasm and hunger for Scripture study were palpable.
From 2011 to 2012, LRSS gained momentum with over twenty seminars attracting thousands of participants across China. These gatherings were not just about academic study; they were moments of spiritual renewal and communal worship. People from all walks of life—students, professionals, retirees—came together to delve into the Scriptures, seeking answers to life's profound questions.
By the end of 2023, there were more than 50,000 people taking part in LRSS in China. The program has been introduced to twenty-nine dioceses in nineteen provinces.
Celebrating Milestones: Graduations and Unity
In China, LRSS celebrates not only academic achievements but also spiritual milestones through formal graduation ceremonies. These ceremonies are joyful occasions filled with the celebration of Mass, heartfelt speeches, and the presentation of certificates. For many participants, receiving their LRSS graduation certificate is a tangible symbol of their dedication to Scripture study and their growth in faith.
The LRSS logo, proudly displayed on bright orange T-Shirts and study materials, has become a badge of honor for participants. Teresa, a young professional in Shanghai, told me, "Wearing the LRSS T-Shirt makes me feel connected to a larger community. It sparks conversations and allows me to share my faith journey with others."
Looking Ahead: A Vision for the Future
As LRSS continues to thrive in China, we envision a future where more Chinese Catholics deepen their faith through Scripture study. Our goal is to reach even more communities, to ignite a passion for Scripture, and to empower individuals to live out their faith boldly.
The story of LRSS in China is one of resilience, growth, and faith. From its humble beginnings to its widespread impact across the country, LRSS has empowered Chinese Catholics to engage deeply with the Word of God and to build a stronger, more connected community. LRSS in China is not just a program; it is a movement that transforms lives!

Pope Francis proclaims 2025 a “Holy Year of Hope”
Pope Francis has chosen “hope” as the theme of the upcoming Jubilee Year 2025 in a document entitled “Spes non confundit” (“Hope does not disappoint”). You may recognize that title as an excerpt from Romans 5:5: “Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the holy Spirit that has been given to us.” As you plan ahead for the Holy Year, keep in mind our delightful Alive in the Word volume Hope: An Anchor in Today’s World by Janet Schaeffler, OP, as well as George Smiga’s upcoming Faith, Hope, and Love in the Bible.
